NANOCOOL

An Energy Efficient Air Conditioning system with Temperature and Humidity independent controls based on the combination of a Liquid Desiccants Cycle with an adapted conventional air cooling system

The main goal is to build on latest advancements in thermally conductive polymer nano-composites and liquid desiccants (halide solution as LiCl) to develop an innovative hybrid liquid desiccant cooling system in the range 100-200 kW which is able to be cost-effectively operated both in residential and commercial buildings, combining the advantages of liquid desiccants with a traditional central air conditioning system. This system simultaneously uses the evaporative cooling heat and condensation heat of a compression-type refrigerator. In the nanoCOOL concept, waste heat from the condenser is utilized for regeneration of the desiccants. No external heat sources are used for regeneration. This mechanism greatly enhances the total efficiency of this system.

While the primary function of nanoCOOL is dehumidification and cooling, the technology also cleans air. By using a liquid lithium chloride solution in fact, many airborne bacteria and allergenic particles are destroyed during the dehumidification process. Used in conjunction with rooftop packaged conventional air conditioners or in stand-alone units, nanoCOOL reaches its temperature and humidity targets more rapidly and with far less energy than other equipment.

nanoCOOL simultaneously dehumidifies and cools air, using standard vapor-compression equipment and aqueous solutions of liquid desiccants (i.e. LiCl)
